Breaking ballet stereotypes: too late to start and other myths
I began ballet a couple of years ago at 23, and when I started I didn't know that it was possible to even start at my age, and it wasn't until I posted my first-ever video about my first ballet performance that I found the adult ballet community that was just starting to form. Ever since, I've been sharing my journey with all the ups and downs from performing my first Nutcracker, to being kicked out of my studio, and I aim to share the reality of starting ballet late with an "unusual" body for ballet and possibly inspiring others to start their dance journey, regardless of age or experience. My content focuses on demystifying ballet and showing that it’s accessible to everyone.
What would you say to other dancers starting out who dont fit into the usual ideals of who ballet is for?To those who don’t fit the traditional ballet mold,
I’d say, ballet is for everyone. If you have a body and want to do ballet you have a ballet body. Obviously, yes you do need a certain level of fitness to be a great ballet dancer because ballet is an incredibly physically demanding sport, but you might not even have the goal of pursuing it professionally, you might want to just do it for fun, and that's equally valid!
It's okay to want to do something just for the pure enjoyment of it, and if that's the case there are absolutely no physical restrictions to this art form. So just embrace your unique journey and enjoy the process.
What made you realise Imperfect Pointes was the brand for you?
I got to know about Imperfect Pointes in one of my comments threads on social media, where my community was sharing their favourite size-inclusive dancewear brands. I searched the brand and fell in love with your commitment to inclusivity and sustainability, which align perfectly with my values.
What do you look for in a leotard? and what item from Imperfect Pointes will you invest in next?
In a ballet leotard, I look for comfort, support, and style and honestly, I’m excited to try the made-to-order leotard feature that Imperfect Pointes offers so I could mix and match the colour options for a new ballet leotard and maybe create a custom matching SAB skirt!
We know that you are really a strong sustainability advocate. What do you think of our world's first sustainable tights?
Your sustainable tights are a game-changer.
They are not only eco-friendly but also provide great fit and comfort, and from what I have heard, they are incredibly long-lasting, so I can't wait to see for how long mine will last.
What would you say to other adult dancers starting en pointe?
Start slow, and build strength, there is no point in comparing yourself to other more experienced dancers because Pointe work is definitely not easy. Don't rush the process because this journey will take time. Listen to your body, enjoy the journey, and just have fun.
What's next for Patrica Jones in an already exciting year?
I recently started Pointe, which has been one of my biggest dreams since the beginning, and I can't wait to share this new chapter of my journey with everyone.
