Article: Ballet NEEDS better tights
Ballet NEEDS better tights
Ballet tights as you know them, needed a serious upgrade.
In 2022, we were struck with a vision to transform a dancewear essential that we knew could be so much better - tights.
After one too many issues with tights going grey after their first wash, not to mention sagging, pinching waistbands, and laddering, we set out to do something about it, determined to fix an everyday frustration. We figured that, since none of the big brands seemed about to pick up the baton and run with the concept of better tights, then Imperfect Pointes needed to get on with the job.
We knew there had to be a better way than the status quo of uncomfortable, unreliable tights. We also figured, that, if dancers were really keen to buy sustainably made leotards, then we were onto a good thing making tights from recycled plastics, that could also be sent back for recycling.
With the enthusiasm and support from our community of "Imperfect Insiders" aka dancers who believe in buying better quality, we set out reinvent an essential dance bag staple, and eliminate the need to constantly buy tights replacements. We are still concerned that other brands design tights that are simply not meant to last. This means you buy more, only for tights to go in the trash, and to end up making their way to landfill, or creating clothing mountains in the Global South or being incinerated.
It became our mission to bring about a revolution in dance tights, keeping them out of landfill and on your legs for longer.
This was quite an undertaking for a small brand and solo-preneur but Helen knew it was only achievable and called in the experts. She reached out to the world's first sustainable hosiery brand Swedish Stockings. Our ballet tights collaboration was born!
Dancers of Royal Danish Ballet in Balanchine's Serenade wearing Imperfect Pointes sustainably made tights.
This convertible tights collaboration is built on the ethos that longevity is the highest form of sustainability and achieving the highest quality design. We wanted to create something innovative that wouldn’t add to the world’s ever-growing throwaway culture. For too long, tights in the dance world have been seen as disposable, not a part of your dance attire to treasure, like you do a favourite leotard.
We are changing that, and we are glad to have you join us on this journey for better tights
Be part of our mission, to create stylish tights designed for comfort and durability with the future in mind.
If you know, or are part of, a Ballet Company, or Ballet School that is making the moves to being more sustainable, follow the lead of the likes of Royal Danish Ballet, Scottish Ballet and the Royal Ballet School and switch to our tights. Or ask us about running a trial.
